Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, was convicted by a Khartoum court this week of apostasy, or the renunciation of faith. Ibrahim is Christian, her husband said. But the court considers her to be Muslim. According to the rights group Amnesty International, she was also convicted of adultery and sentenced to 100 lashes because her marriage to a Christian man is considered void under Sharia law. Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese doctor who is facing execution for marrying a Christian, has given birth to a baby girl in prison.

Her daughter was delivered in the hospital wing of the Omdurman Federal Women’s prison in North Khartoum yesterday, where the 27-year-old has been held since a judge sentenced her to death for ‘abandoning’ her Islamic faith.

Her lawyer Mohaned Mustafa Elnour told the MailOnline: ‘This is some good news in what has been a terrible ordeal for Meriam.

‘I am planning to visit her with her husband Daniel later today. I think they are going to call the baby Maya.’

Meriam’s case has caused outrage around the world, after the pregnant mother-of-one was arrested and sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging earlier in the month.
