Meriam Yehya Ibrahim, 27, was convicted by a Khartoum court this week of apostasy, or the renunciation of faith. Ibrahim is Christian, her husband said. But the court considers her to be Muslim. According to the rights group Amnesty International, she was also convicted of adultery and sentenced to 100 lashes because her marriage to a Christian man is considered void under Sharia law. Meriam Ibrahim, the Sudanese doctor who is facing execution for marrying a Christian, has given birth to a baby girl in prison.

Her daughter was delivered in the hospital wing of the Omdurman Federal Women’s prison in North Khartoum yesterday, where the 27-year-old has been held since a judge sentenced her to death for ‘abandoning’ her Islamic faith.

Her lawyer Mohaned Mustafa Elnour told the MailOnline: ‘This is some good news in what has been a terrible ordeal for Meriam.

‘I am planning to visit her with her husband Daniel later today. I think they are going to call the baby Maya.’

Meriam’s case has caused outrage around the world, after the pregnant mother-of-one was arrested and sentenced to 100 lashes and death by hanging earlier in the month.

  1. Oh my God! The article said her situation had caused outrage around the world. Maybe this outrage will inspire change, This is horrifying and is a sad reminder of how far womankind still has to go.

    • It’s so unbelieveable, that this sort of thing is happening in the year 2014.

      I do hope Meriam can get the help that she needs, but more so that the law and attitudes will change where she is (in Sudan… but clearly this isn’t just a problem there). In a twisted way she’s lucky, as she will have two years to get help… unlike the poor woman who was stoned in Pakistan… by her own family!
